Overswinging at the Top? It Might Just Be Your Grip... Here's the Fix! If you're overswinging at the top, check the grip before anything else. A lot of golfers grab the club with the lead hand and keep the thumb off the top of the grip entirely... essentially a baseball bat grip. That leaves a ton of play between the palm and fingers, and when you change direction at the top, the club jackknifes... too much bend, too loose, out of control. The fix: get more of the meat of the trail thumb on the shaft. Use it as a stopper. Now instead of a loose, collapsing angle at the top, you've got a 90-degree wrist angle and a club that stays where you put it.
