Jake Trego is one of the most magnetic and inspiring members of the NLU community. We’re excited to share his story with our new film, “Keep Showing Up,” a music documentary made possible by The Nest, which premieres on August 12 at 8 p.m. ET on our YouTube Channel. Jake was 33 and seemingly healthy when he was suddenly diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. Since that day, he and his wife, Roz, have lived through surgeries, chemotherapy, good news, bad news and the strange reality of trying to keep building a life while waiting for the next result. In the chaos, Jake has continued to look for the places in his life where he can still feel like himself. And those places have often been in his music and his golf. Jake first became part of the No Laying Up world through The Nest, our membership community. He found his way into the “Ohio Against the World” chapter of the No Laying Up Roosts and quickly became one of those people everyone seemed to know. Over time, his fight became personal to a much larger group of people. Throughout the uncertainty, Jake has kept writing and playing music. He has kept playing golf whenever his body has allowed it. He has also been remarkably open about the ugliest parts of this journey – the fear, anger, depression, exhaustion and uncertainty that saturate each day. But most importantly, he’s shared his commitment to showing up and giving your all, whatever the next step happens to be. The film was directed by Matt Golden and produced by Golden Film Co., and made possible by The Nest, Imperial Headwear and Stone Creek Coffee. Matt saw something in Jake’s story long before there was a real production plan behind it. He and Jake had talked for years about making a film together that was a blend of storytelling and musical performances. Matt deserves a ton of credit for the vision, care and persistence behind this project. The film is honest, yet hopeful, and unlike anything we’ve been a part of in the past. We hope the film reaches people who already know Jake. We also hope it reaches people who have never heard his name. It’s a story that does not offer an easy answer. It hopefully offers some useful guidance: keep coming back. We are incredibly proud of what Matt Golden and his team have made and are grateful that Jake and Roz trusted the team with their story.
